Synopsis: When backpackers come to a small village in rural Laos reachable only by boat, their arrival divides the local population and disrupts the relationship between two childhood friends. Banana Pancakes and the Children of Sticky Rice is a complex East-meets-West story told in a cinematographic language that is as rich as it is confrontational. While the backpackers visit the remote village in search of an authentic traditional experience, the inhabitants of the village seek the income and other amenities the west has to offer. The two worlds meet at the crossroads of their opposite desires; the one longing for authenticity, the other for modernity. In this microcosm, their encounter leaves no one unchanged.
Director: After studying audiovisual arts at the Willem the Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, Daan Veldhuizen has been working as a director/cameraman and editor for different projects around the globe. First focused on fictional stories driven by real-life occurrences, Daan changed his course to documentaries with a strong sense of visual storytelling.
