Synopsis: For the first time ever “This Land is Our Land” follows the lives of five farmers in Myanmar. As the country moves away from authoritarian rule towards democratic reforms for the first time in over 60 years, we are able to catch a glimpse of the lives of farmers without restraint or censorship from the authorities. This documentary captures farmers struggling to gain a foothold as the very ground they stand on changes. A thriving forest in the Dry Zone is confiscated; drought leads to wood-cutting and wood-cutting leads to drought as vicious cycle spins in another area; the Ayerwaddy river eats away an island village that used to be prosperous; coal mines and landfills replace farmlands and villages in Tigyit (Shan State). As these farmers grapple with the changes of their land, they share their stories, thoughts, worries, and hopes.

Director: Sai Kong Kham is a graduate of the School of Audio Engineering (SAE) in Yangon. Since then, Sai Kong Kham worked as a sound engineer for a variety of local radio stations for about three years. In 2011, he switched his career paths and worked as an independent filmmaker. He has directed an award-winning documentary film “Sweetie Pie” for the 1st Wathann Filmfest in Myanmar and was shown in several other countries. In 2013, Sai Kong Kham- along with likeminded friends- set up Tagu Films to support and produce independent films in Myanmar. In 2014, “This Land is Our Land” won the Aung San Suu Kyi National Award for Best Documentary and the Vaclav Havel Library Award, which was the first time in Myanmar when a documentary was awarded two prizes in one festival.
