Fishbone on the Hook

Synopsis

The documentary traces the ecological changes in the Bosphorus and the impact of industrial fishing on marine life. Striking images captured both above and below the water, accompanied by a powerful soundscape, reveal an ecosystem overshadowed by purse seine nets.

Focusing on the experiences and perspectives of people whose lives have been closely tied to fishing since the 1970s and 80s, the film reflects the shift from the maritime culture of the past to today’s industrial reality. This close observation, which examines humanity’s impact on nature through a simple narrative, invites us to reconsider our weakening connection to the sea.

Director Biography

Bedirhan Topcu

Currently pursuing his second undergraduate degree in the Department of Film Design and Directing at the Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts. Alongside his musical productions since childhood, he creates works with an interdisciplinary approach across different art forms such as cinema, photography, and digital collage.

His debut documentary, Fishbone on the Hook (2026), emerged from an independent production process free from commercial concerns. At the centre of his artistic practice is a commitment to following his own aesthetic sense and creative instincts, independent of external influence.
