Fog Eaters

Synopsis

While studying mountain lions along the California coast, environmental toxicologist Dr. Peter Weiss-Penzias discovers that coastal fog carries methylmercury into terrestrial ecosystems. A toxic organic metal, methylmercury accumulates through the food chain, reaching increasingly high levels and posing a serious threat to fragile ecosystems. But how does mercury get into the fog in the first place?

As Peter and his team trace the path of this toxic substance through the environment, a much broader story of pollution begins to emerge. Following this mystery, the film also traces the invisible connections that bind us all together.

Director Biography

Kyle Baker

Bay Area-based documentary filmmaker and editor whose work often explores the intersections of history, labor, and more-than-human worlds. Academically trained in ethnomusicology, he received his MFA in Social Documentation from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2020. His work has been shown at the Telluride Film Festival, IDFA, the Mill Valley Film Festival, and community screenings around the US.
