Ghost Nets

Synopsis

Lost during fishing or carelessly abandoned at sea, fishing nets can remain underwater for years, destroying marine ecosystems. These invisible traps damage the habitats of countless species until volunteer divers bring them back to the surface. What began on Büyükada with a group of volunteers removing nets tangled around rocks and corals gradually grew into larger collection efforts involving institutional partnerships, followed by the reuse of the recovered material. The work contributes both to marine conservation and sustainable production. Taking a critical look at our relationship with nature, the film follows concrete steps being taken to protect the future of our seas.

Director Biography

Ayşenur Sülün

Born in Istanbul in 1999. She graduated with high honors from Istanbul University's Department of Radio, Television and Cinema in 2024. She began her master’s degree in the same department and still continues. During her undergraduate studies, she directed a television documentary as part of an internal internship and participated in various competitions. In 2024, she served as the coordinator for two short films exploring the Syrian war from diverse perspectives, both of which were featured in the official selection of the Turan Film Festival. She actively continues to produce short documentaries and fiction films.
