Missing Rio Doce

Synopsis

November 5, 2015. A toxic mining dam collapsed in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Forty million cubic meters of sludge flooded the Rio Doce, pushing pollution 650 kilometers straight into the Atlantic. It remains the worst ecological disaster in Brazilian history.

Nine years pass. Director Claudia Neubern returns to the ruined region to meet fishermen stranded by a dead river and farmers stripped of their land. The community remains resilient, but the people’s hands are still tied by a mining giant that evades all accountability.

Director Biography

Claudia Neubern

Brazilian scriptwriter and director living in France. She has worked with Alain Guiraudie and Olivier Ducastel on several feature-length fiction films. Alongside her work as a scriptwriter, she has been directing documentaries since the 2000s, which have won awards at Cinema du Réel, RIDM and FID Marseille.
