Seablindness

Synopsis

Ships deliver 90% of everything we consume. The film explores the space where land meets the sea. Ports mark an in-between zone where capital concentrates and disperses. Vast warehouses fill the landscape. Intimidating cranes move hundreds of tons of cargo with incredible precision. Massive ships stand ready to sail to the other side of the world.

Patient observation of these same places reveals a completely different perspective. A naked child learns to swim in the shadow of a crane. Wild birds wander beside container towers. Young people in canoes briefly block the pier.

This documentary poem tackles ecological worry but it does not simply observe those who live with this fear. It already belongs to them.

Director Biography

Tereza Smetanová

Film and theatre director working with documentary and participatory forms. She studied at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava and at FAMU in Prague. She is a co-founder of the experimental theatre collective Unkulunkulu, presenting immersive performances at festivals such as Malá Inventura, Kiosk, and Next Wave. She is also an active member of the Slovak Open Culture! movement. Her short documentaries have screened at major international festivals, including Doclisboa, Jihlava IDFF, FIPADOC, Thessaloniki IDF, and ZagrebDox, and have received multiple awards. She is currently developing her debut feature documentary.
