The Sky Above Zenica

Synopsis

In Zenica, one of the world’s most polluted cities, residents are fighting for a liveable future. Emissions from the city’s major steel and coke plant threaten public health, while economic dependence, political interests, and weak regulation make change difficult. Following Eko Forum Zenica’s seven-year struggle, the film shows ordinary people standing up to a powerful corporation and the networks of power surrounding it. Using data, legal action, the media, and international institutions, activists work to make pollution visible and those responsible accountable. Zenica’s story goes beyond a local environmental struggle, exposing the conflict between corporate profit and the right to live, and the power of collective action to bring about change.

Director Biography

Zlatko Pranjic, Nanna Frank Møller

Nanna Frank Møller

Director, cinematographer, and film editor. She graduated from the editing department of the National Film School of Denmark in 1999. Her directorial debut, the documentary about a traveling circus group, won the Grand Prix at the Odense International Film Festival and first prize in DOK Leipzig’s Young Talent Documentary Competition. Her film Shanghai Space won first prize in the Environment and Wildlife category at the 2010 Guangzhou International Film Festival. The Sky Above Zenica is her fifth feature.

Zlatko Pranjić

Bosnian-British film director born in Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in 1965. He moved to London in 1993 during the Yugoslav wars. His feature debut, the documentary Guidance Through the Black Hole (2017), co-written and co-directed with Aleksandar Nikolic, was nominated for the Heart of Sarajevo. The Sky Above Zenica is his second feature.
