The Unfixing

Synopsis

After a surfing accident, Nicole develops a serious illness that makes everyday life and caring for her children increasingly difficult. Soon, her daughter begins to show similar symptoms. As her own body grows more fragile, Nicole starts to see connections between her personal crisis and a planet under the strain of climate change. Her search for solutions gradually gives way to acceptance, grief, listening to nature, and learning from others.

Through the story of a mother and daughter, the film brings personal and ecological loss together. Often described as, at its heart, a story filled with hope, it moves from grief toward solidarity and asks us to reconsider our relationship with ourselves and the world, while searching for ways to heal together.

Director Biography

Nicole Betancourt

Emmy Award-winning filmmaker whose work brings together personal stories and political issues. Her debut documentary, Before You Go (HBO), about her father’s death from AIDS, received several awards, including an Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Documentary and a Golden Spire at the San Francisco International Film Festival. Her films include 90 Miles (POV/PBS), Sing the Water Song, and a number of shorts addressing environmental and social justice issues. She is a Sustainability Leaders Network Fellow and a Kellogg Food and Community Fellow, and has served on the Emmy Awards jury, the New York State Council of the Arts panel, and the board of New York Women in Film & Television.
