Synopsis

The Yanomami are an indigenous hunter-gatherer and agricultural society of 35,000 people who live in harmony with nature in Amazon. Morzaniel Ɨramari is the first filmmaker from the Yanomami. With Mãri Hi, he contributes to his people's audiovisual production:

"Many non-Indigenous people came to Yanomami land to shoot footage, but the Yanomami never spoke in those films. Nobody listened to them. Only non-Indigenous people took photos and recorded footage. This is not good for us. They project their own thoughts onto the Yanomami image. They include many non-Indigenous elements, their own music, their images, and items from the outside world. They do not tell the truth or explain how things really are."

In the film, flowers bloom on the Mãri tree in Yanomami land, and dreams begin.

Director Biography

Morzaniel Ɨramari

Yanomami filmmaker, born in 1980 in Watorikɨ village, Demini region in the Yanomami Indigenous Land, state of Amazonas, Brazil. He worked as Communication Coordinator at the Hutukara Associação Yanomami (Boa Vista) and was trained in cinema in 2010 in the Indigenous Culture Points - Video in the Villages project. He works as an interpreter, translator, filmmaker and director. His films circulated in several film festivals in Brazil and around the world.

He directed two films that won the Best Film award at Mostra Aldeia SP and at Forumdoc.BH festival.

In his most recent film, Mãri hi - The Tree of Dream (2023), was filmed with the great shaman, Yanomami indigenous leader and president of the Hutukara Yanomami Association, Davi Kopenawa Yanomami.
