Synopsis

Set on an ecologically vital island in a Southeast Asian delta, entirely under protection, the film enters a landscape rich in wildlife, including saltwater crocodiles. Fishing families set out on journeys lasting weeks to catch crabs found in abundance among dense mangrove forests, facing the dangers that lie hidden in the muddy creeks. The documentary follows a couple who have to leave their school-age daughter behind in the village as they set off, opening a window onto a floating community struggling to make a living together. As we witness the lives of these resilient fishers, we begin to see their deep connection to both their environment and spiritual world, and everything that moves across this water-bound landscape.

Director Biography

Paing Aung

Born in Yangon in 1993. He began his career as a journalist in 2014 and worked for Street View Journal, Myanmar Cable Network, Myanmar Press Photo Agency and submitted a photo-story about Mogok mine workers to the 2017 Yangon Photo Festival. After completing a number of Yangon Film School courses, his first documentary portrayed the lingering trauma experienced by a former ’88 generation’ political prisoner. He has since worked as a cinematographer on a string of documentaries by fellow students. The Fishers of Meinmahla which was filmed in challenging conditions, is his graduation film.
