Synopsis

While illegal mining puts economic and ecological pressure on Yanomami territory and culture, the film brings traditional narratives and daily life together through the voices of the Yanomami themselves. Cinema becomes a tool of resistance. It keeps cultural memory alive against outside threats. In the dry season, the Watorikɨ community gathers for an ancestral fishing ritual. They prepare timbó vine, a plant used to stun fish. The villagers release it into sections of the river and catch fish together. Two young Yanomami filmmakers document this collective practice which shows how ancestral knowledge sustains their bond with nature and community life.

Aida Harika and Edmar Tokorino

Yanomami filmmakers who live in the village of Watorikɨ, Demini, on the Yanomami Indigenous Land in the Brazilian Amazon.

Both filmmakers are part of the collective of Yanomami communicators created in 2018 by the Hutukara Yanomami Association with support from the Instituto Socioambiental (ISA). In order to strengthen Hutukara's communication and develop strategies to strengthen traditional knowledge among young people, whose interest in cell phones and non-indigenous technologies is growing, a group of 6 young Yanomami from three regions of the Yanomami Indigenous Territory - Watorikɨ, Missão Catrimani, and Novo Demini- will receive audiovisual training. Since 2021, they have participated in several workshops where they produced videos and short films.

Roseane Yariana

She was part of the first group of young people chosen by the board of Hutukara Associação Yanomami to participate in audiovisual training workshops in 2018. She is a resident of the Buriti village in the Demini region of the Brazilian Amazon and is the daughter of Joseca Yanomami, an internationally recognized artist known for his drawings.
