Time Amongst Olive Trees

Synopsis

What begins as a simple look at olive oil production turns into a poetic reflection on belonging, time, and disappearing rural traditions. To make the film, the director returns to her roots in Orcera, a town in Andalusia’s Jaén province. She is the region’s only filmmaker. Feeling a responsibility to capture a way of life on the verge of extinction, she documents her hometown across a decade, contrasting life ten years ago with today. Through an unhurried, immersive pace, stark landscapes, and quiet piano music, the documentary exposes some of Europe’s hardest realities: climate change, agricultural crisis, migration, and rural depopulation.

Director Biography

Fany de la Chica

Fany de la Chica is a filmmaker trained at Columbia University, New York. Her films have been selected at festivals such as Telluride, Málaga, Seville, and Cinequest, and she won an Emmy at the College Television Awards. She was selected for Berlinale Talents and labs such as Torino Film Lab, Reykjavík Film Lab, and CineQuaNon Lab. She won the Alice Guy Award for screenwriting by female filmmakers, and one of her documentaries was preselected for the Goya Awards.
