ALPER MARAL WORKSHOP: 31.10-1.11.2014

MUSIC IN DOCUMENTARIES: ETHIC, AESTHETIC AND TECHNICAL FLUCTUATIONS BETWEEN SUBJECTS AND OBJECTS/TOOLS AND TARGETS

In this seminar and succeeding workshop composer and musicologist Alper Maral will outline the basics in film scoring with a focus on documentaries in particular. Using some examples, both positive and negative, he will try to highlight the motivating and manipulational aspects of “underscoring,” and suggest a critical approach towards thematizing the music (and its makers) with sociological, communicational, ethnomusical, and more important: ethic understandings and respective methodologies. For participants, no musical background needed.

Alper Maral, Ph. D. is a composer and musicologist focusing rather on literal and political connotations in music. He has been teaching in several universities; either as a composer, performer or lecturer, he contributed numerous international events—festivals, conferences, etc., co-founded and directed academic or artistic associations, got international commissions, prizes and residences. He is a composer mainly for stage and screen, focusing on rather small ensembles and electroacoustic environments. His music is published by AK Müzik, Müzik Hayvanı, Pan Yayıncılık, and WERGO labels, among others. Besides numerous scholarly publications particularly in social science he has executive posts in some important international institutions: He is a member of ISCM (International Association for Contemporary Music) executive committee, co-founder and vice-president of New Music Cooperative, Istanbul Baroque Foundation, delegate for IAMIC (International Association for Music Information Centers), ex-general secretary for Cultural Studies Foundation, a.m.

With his numerous musical scores and productions for films, and seminars, conferences and workshops about film music and sound, Maral is one of the leading figures of the branch, especially in academia. Besides some international nominations for his film music, he received the Parkcity Silver Award for Music in Experimental Film (Altyazı, 2008).
